But the wilderness known as \u201cOregon Country\u201d\u2014including present-day <a href=\"https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/tag\/oregon\/\">Oregon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/tag\/washington\/\">Washington<\/a> and part of <a href=\"https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/tag\/idaho\/\">Idaho<\/a>\u2014still belonged to the British, leaving Anglo-Saxon Americans eager to settle the area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lewis and Clark&#8217;s 1803 expedition was part of a U.S. Government plan to open Oregon Country to settlement. However, the hazardous route blazed by this party was not feasible for families traveling by wagon and an easier trail was needed.
