Of course, one of the most popular forms of recreation on National Trails is hiking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you\u2019re enjoying a National Scenic or Historic Trail, you might hear hikers use some unfamiliar terms and phrases. Here is a list of common terms to help you \u2018talk the talk\u2019 while you\u2019re hiking the trail.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glossary of Hiking Terms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Base weight:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The weight of the gear being carried by a hiker not including consumables ( i.e. food, water, etc.).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Blaze:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A mark on a tree, rock, sign, etc. that indicates the trail route.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Camel up:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To drink as much water as one can to avoid having to carry a lot of water to the next water source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>FKT:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fastest Known Time, or the record for completing a particular hike, run, bike, etc. on a trail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Day hike:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A hike that is short enough to be completed in a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ford: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A river crossing where your feet will get wet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ridgerunner:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A trail employee who works on the ground to connect with recreationists, provide education on responsible stewardship, and help maintain the trail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Scramble:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using your hands and feet to climb up rocks and boulders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Section hiker:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A person who hikes a trail one section at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Switchbacks:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zig-zag pathways that lead to the summit of a mountain, hill, or peak.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Thru-hiker:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A person who hikes an entire long trail at one time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trail Angel:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A person who helps hikers on their journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trail Magic:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An unexpected gift or find that makes a hiker\u2019s journey easier or more pleasant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trail Name:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A nickname given to a hiker that often refers to something that occurred on a trail or describes something about them. It becomes their pseudonym when on a trail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trail Town:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A town easily accessible to a trail where hikers can stop for supplies, a hot meal, or an overnight visit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Triple Crowner:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A person who thru-hikes the \u201cbig three\u201d National Scenic Trails: the Appalachian Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Pacific Crest Trail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling ready to hop on a trail?
