{"id":7372,"date":"2018-01-31T16:22:04","date_gmt":"2018-01-31T22:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/?p=7372"},"modified":"2019-05-18T07:46:34","modified_gmt":"2019-05-18T12:46:34","slug":"ala-kahakai-nht-2017-highlights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/ala-kahakai-nht-2017-highlights\/","title":{"rendered":"Ala Kahakai NHT 2017 Highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ala Kahakai Trail Association (AKTA)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>E Mau N\u0101 Ala Hele (EM)<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>OUTREACH<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Programs \u2014 AKTA used a foundation grant to hold two community outreach education programs on the trail; engaged in three events with a booth to pass out information and talk to community about the trail; EM and AKTA led hikes and organized field outings, such as \u201cwalk and talk\u201d with NPS through Pu&#8217;uhonua O H\u014dnaunau National Historical Park on National Trails Day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>PROTECTION<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Land \u2014 AKTA is in the process of securing county and State funds to purchase about 2,000 acres in Ka&#8217;\u016b to protect the coastline which the trail traverses ($2 million of the $6 million needed has been secured so far).<\/li>\n<li>Advocacy \u2014 EM has been following potential developments along the trail and testifying to the County Planning Board and Planning Commission with concerns about how they could affect the trail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>CAPACITY<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Partnerships \u2014 AKTA partnered with a canoe club to start a long distance race to bring awareness and support to the trail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Unless otherwise indicated, all material in Pathways Across America is public domain.
