Some of the main issues or pieces of legislation discussed include the funding and reauthorization for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lwcfcoalition.com\/legislation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Land and Water Conservation Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that\u2019s set to expire in September, completing and increasing funding for the national trails, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-bill\/2862\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildfire Disaster Funding Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and opposing amending the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-bill\/1349\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilderness Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to allow bikes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some partners also had the opportunity to meet with Tony Tooke, the new U.S. Forest Service Chief, and \u201cRecreation Czar\u201d Rick May, the new U.S. Department of Interior Senior Advisor, to discuss their trail-related priorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young leaders with American Hiking Society\u2019s inaugural class of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanhiking.org\/advocacy\/introducing-nextgen-leaders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NextGen Trail Leaders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.appalachiantrail.org\/home\/community\/news\/2016\/02\/23\/the-appalachian-trail-conservancy-announces-leadership-stewards-for-the-next-generation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next Generation Advisory Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and students from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcta.org\/2018\/hike-the-hill-56251\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Charter High School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also attended Hike the Hill to learn, network, share their stories, and advocate for trails and public lands.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7547\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/HTH_next_gen_ahs.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7547\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7547\" src=\"http:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/HTH_next_gen_ahs-1024x634.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/HTH_next_gen_ahs-1024x634.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/HTH_next_gen_ahs-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/HTH_next_gen_ahs-768x476.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/HTH_next_gen_ahs-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/HTH_next_gen_ahs.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">American Hiking Society&#8217;s NextGen Trail Leaders (from left) Liz Thomas, Tyler Lee, Ron Griswell, Dakota Jackson, and Maricela Rosales during the Hike the Hill welcome reception at Washington Plaza Hotel on February 11, 2018.<br \/>(Photo by Chelsea Bodamer)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2018 marks the 50th Anniversary of the National Trails System Act (NTSA) and Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, a few additional meetings and events were held during Hike the Hill to coordinate efforts, commemorate the anniversary, and plan for the future. In total, over 1,045,000 hours of volunteer service were <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Gold-Sheet-2017-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">documented<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within the NTS, which equates to a value of over $25,795,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, private contributions from the national trails organizations for the NTS totaled over $14,485,000. However, as incredible as these contributions are, they are not enough to fully develop and sustain our trails. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Full funding of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and greater funding for the agencies\u2019 trail programs by Congress will help to provide means to close missing links, protect high-priority recreational and historic areas, and fund additional maintenance and necessary resources to already existing trails. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/land-and-water-conservation-fund\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for LWCF and Congressional Updates.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support the trails<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, more than ever, it\u2019s important for congress to hear our voice.
