In late 2010, after taking over publication of our calendar, Rizzoli International Publications approached ATC to publish what became \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.appalachiantrail.org\/home\/community\/news\/2013\/09\/18\/the-appalachian-trail-celebrating-america-s-hiking-trail-named-2012-nature-book-of-the-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Appalachian Trail: Celebrating America\u2019s Hiking Trail<\/a>\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and asked if we could persuade Bill Bryson to write the foreword (we did).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/book_appalachian_trail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7956\" src=\"http:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/book_appalachian_trail-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/book_appalachian_trail-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/book_appalachian_trail-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/book_appalachian_trail-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/book_appalachian_trail-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/book_appalachian_trail-75x75.jpg 75w, https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/book_appalachian_trail-250x250.jpg 250w, https:\/\/pnts.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/book_appalachian_trail.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with the course of all books, it took time and back-and-forth to develop what became half history\u2014illustrated with archival photos that had seldom, if ever, been published\u2014and half a pictorial of the Trail, sequentially and by categories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ATC\u2019s archives go back to before its 1925 founding and were, naturally, a rich source for not only the text but also such artifacts as a faded, previously unnoticed 1928 meeting sign-in sheet that boosts the \u201cautographs\u201d of all the AT\u2019s pioneers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Editor Candice Fehrman and Associate Publisher Jim Muschett solicited thousands of modern images from AT photographers, from which they selected about 350\u2014the book\u2019s true selling point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both partners were pleased when it was released in September 2012. The first Sunday in December, \u201cParade\u201d magazine highlighted it for the holidays. It rose that afternoon to #65 over all of Amazon\u2019s books. The first printing of 10,000 was gone by year-end, and a handful of reprintings have been ordered since. \u201cForeword Reviews\u201d named it book of the year in one category, and the design (by Susi Oberhelman) garnered a National Outdoor Books Award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Unless otherwise indicated, all material in Pathways Across America is public domain.
