Fred Shaffer

Fred Shaffer has worked for M-NCPPC for over 25 years and for the majority of that time has focused on bicycle, pedestrian, and trails issues. His work in recent years has focused on pedestrian safety, the provision of Complete Streets, and writing grants to implement trails and bikeways. He was appointed by Governor of Maryland to serve on the Maryland Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (MBPAC). He also serves as the Chair of the Prince George’s County Bicycle and Trails Advisory Group (BTAG). He has spoken at a variety of conferences in the past, with previous topics including the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail On-Road Bicycle Route, the role of trail advisory groups in planning for new trails, the development of equestrian trails and incorporating trails into new development. He works regularly with the M-NCPPC Department of Parks and Recreation and the local and state road agencies to incorporate bicycle facilities into capital improvement projects and with private developers to incorporate trails into new developments. He has also worked with the National Park Service for over twenty years to implement the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail in Prince George’s County.
